Adoption

Add a new furry family member

OHS has many cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, and sometimes other small animals, available for adoption throughout the Okanagan Valley and Shuswap. As a foster-based organization with no central building, animals are cared for in volunteer foster homes or housed in our partner stores until they find a new, loving home.

Are you looking to add a new furry family member?

All available animals are posted in our “Animals For Adoption” photo album on the OHS Facebook page and here on our website below. Listings are updated in real time. Hover or click on the photo for details and Vet Cost Recovery amounts.

Please contact the foster home in the photo caption to discuss and, if invited, arrange to meet in person. An online application form will be provided at the time of the meeting.

➡️ Please Note:
Due to high interest, especially for puppies and kittens, not all applicants will receive a meeting. Fosters may only be able to respond to the first five inquiries.

A carrier is required when adopting cats or kittens. All animals must travel safely to their new homes in secure carriers.

Adoption Process – How It Works

  1. View available animals – Check the OHS Facebook page album or our website listings.
  2. Contact the foster directly – Reach out using the contact details in the photo caption.
  3. Meet in person – Meetings are arranged directly with the foster, or at one of our adoption partner locations.
  4. Apply on site – An adoption application form is provided once you meet the animal.
  5. Screening process – Applications are reviewed to ensure the best match for the animal’s needs and the adopter’s lifestyle. An adoption interview with an OHS Adoption Coordinator is conducted either in person or by phone to approve the adoption.
  6. Finalize adoption – Approved adopters provide the Vet Cost Recovery amount by e-transfer at the time of adoption. This includes:
    – Spay or neuter
    – First vaccine and deworm
    – Veterinary exam
    – Microchip or tattoo (varies by clinic)
  7.  30-day grace period – Adoptions allow 30 days to ensure a good fit, with refund of the Vet Cost Recovery amount if the animal is returned within that time.
  8. Travel considerations – Kittens still in post-recovery after spay/neuter will not be permitted to travel outside of the Greater Okanagan.
  9. Ongoing support – Our team provides post-adoption guidance and resources for a smooth transition.
