Family of Baby Kittens Rescued from Cat Colony

Thanks to the dedication and compassion of OHS volunteers and the support of our community, a family of four 6-week-old kittens from a known colony in Kelowna have been brought to safety.

It all began two weeks ago on Halloween when the first kitten was rescued by OHS volunteer Ron Ready. Shortly after, the second kitten was found, then the third, also by Ron. Knowing that the fourth kitten was still outside with its mom, our team patiently and diligently monitored the area, careful not to capture mom before each kitten was rescued first…

Finally, on Thursday evening last week, the fourth kitten from this small family was discovered by Ron and brought to our veterinary partners at Spall and Harvey Animal Hospital for a check-up before being reunited with its siblings!

Now, all four kittens are safely settled into a loving foster home where they will grow and socialize before being put up for adoption. As part of their journey, these kittens will also receive essential medical care, including vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spaying/neutering.

These four kittens and their mom are just a small part of the larger rescue operation that has taken place this year thanks to the Okanagan Humane Society. In addition to this little family, dozens of other cats and kittens from the same colony – one OHS has been monitoring for many years – have been brought to safety.

Due to an influx of homeless or abandoned unfixed cats and kittens in the area, the colony grew significantly in size this year.

In 2024, nearly 50 cats and kittens from this colony alone have been rescued, spayed or neutered, and moved through our Adoption Program to find loving homes.

This is an example of how important it is that we work together as a community to help rescue, spay and neuter to save more lives and prevent the unnecessary suffering of local community animals.

Right now, OHS volunteers like Ron are working closely with business owners, tenants, and community volunteers on the ground to rescue as many lost, abandoned, and homeless animals as possible before extreme cold sets in.

By bringing these animals to safety, we not only ensure they stay warm and protected from the dangers of freezing temperatures this winter, but also provide them with crucial medical care. This includes spay/neuter surgeries to prevent more kittens from being born into the harsh life on the streets, and to give those already in need a second chance at a loving, indoor home.

As we shared earlier this month, four generous donors came together to offer $25,000 each for our Angels for Animals match campaign this holiday season. Recently, one of those donors unexpectedly doubled their contribution to help us increase our match goal to $125,000, for an ambitious fundraising goal of $250,000.

With an average cost of care of $300 per animal, meeting this fundraising goal will help us guarantee support for more than 830 local animals!

When you make a donation today, your impact will be doubled, and together, we can give animals in need the second chance they deserve.
